A large number of fans cheer their hero as the mega star receives the honour
VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra University conferred honorary D.Litt. on noted economist C. Rangarajan, honorary D.Sc. on noted Defence scientist A. Sivathanu Pillai and honorary Kalaprapoorna on film star Chiranjeevi during its 71st and 72nd convocation held here on Monday.
A large number of Chiranjeevi fans gathered outside the vast AU premises as convocation went on in the Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy Utsavarangam (Convocation Hall). They began gathering around AU at 11 a.m. and the police were deployed in large number and traffic was diverted to keep the Chiranjeevi fans at bay and to ensure smooth arrival of the Governor and Chancellor of AU Rameshwar Thakur, Dr. Rangarajan and Dr. Pillai and other guests and VIPs.
The 2,500-capacity Convocation Hall was full and many were standing on the sides. Not many fans of Chiranjeevi could gain entry into the venue which was strictly restricted as AU had to accommodate all the Ph.D. and M.Phil. candidates, gold medal and special prize winners, along with AU teachers and others for whom invitations had been extended. Those present inside cheered Chiranjeevi loudly when he received the honorary degree and almost strictly followed the repeated requests of AU officials to keep the decorum of convocation by not clapping and cheering repeatedly and unnecessarily. Mr. Rameshwar Thakur conferred the honorary degrees on Chiranjeevi, Dr. Rangarajan and Dr. Pillai and handed in the doctorate and M.Phil. degrees, gold medals, special prizes and best researchers awards to AU teachers. Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy in his address explained the programmes and activities of the university and future plans and MoUs AU was going to enter into with reputed international institutions.
Registrar P. Vijaya Prakash, all members of AU Executive Council and Academic Senate were seated on the dais.
