HYDERABAD: N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Congress MLA from Piler constituency in Chittoor district, is set to become the next Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
To be assisted by another young legislator Nadendla Manohar from Tenali as his deputy, Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy will be formally elected when the first session of the 13th Assembly gets under way in the first week of June.
The selection of Mr. Kiran Kumar, an aspirant for a Cabinet berth, for the Speaker’s post has come as a surprise to many in the Congress party as his bete noire P. Ramachandra Reddy (Punganur) found a place in the Council of Ministers.
Mr. Kiran Kumar, a three-time MLA and Chief Whip in the previous House, is known as bitter critic of TDP president and Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu and has earned a “staunch anti-TDP” brand with his verbal duels with the TDP legislators within and outside the Assembly.
Mr. Manohar, on the other hand, chaired the proceedings as a panel speaker in the previous House and is known for his balanced behaviour. He headed an all-important House Committee dealing with the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan scandal that rocked the State. IT savvy legislator as he is known,
Mr. Manohar played a key role in making the Legislative Assembly Wi-Fi enabled, making it the first of its kind achievement in the country.
