CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation’s decision to merge its schools that lack patronage has led to the closure of 30 schools in various localities in the city.

“The number of schools run by the civic body has come down to 283 after the merger,” said M. Balaji, Deputy Commissioner (Education) of the Chennai Corporation. A total of 313 schools – 139 primary, 109 middle, 38 high and 27 higher secondary schools – are run by the civic body.

It recently sent a circular to the schools informing them of the merger.

The civic body has also ordered the authorities not to admit new students in the 30 schools mentioned in the circular.

Corporation schools in Chintadripet, Thousand Lights, Chamiers Road, and T.Nagar are among those that have been merged with the schools nearby. The civic body had asked headmasters and teachers of the merged schools to take part in the counselling for transfer of teachers this year.

“The vacant school buildings will be properly used for achieving educational goals,” said Mayor M.Subramanian. The number of students in corporation schools had increased in the recent years and now it was 1,37,000, but in some schools the number had been declining, he said.
