TIRUCHI: The scenic spot of Ponnaniyar Dam, on the border of Tiruchi and Karur districts, will soon become a full-fledged picnic spot.
Under a Rs. 25-lakh tourism development project, which is nearing completion, a boat house, three parks with decorative lights, water supply and toilets are coming up. Three pedal fibre boats _ two four-seaters and one two-seater _ have already been brought to the dam. The project is being executed by the Public Works Department.
While the Tourism Department sanctioned Rs. 12.5 lakh, the balance was shared by Karur district administration and the Kadavur panchayat union where the dam is located. The dam, with a total water-spread of 313 acres and surrounded by hillocks, is situated amidst a serene environment.
The project has given a facelift to the dam, thanks to the execution of 13 related works by the PWD. A lion’s share was utilised for setting up three parks of which one is for children. The swing and slide together with giant replicas of dinosaur and other animals are bound to attract the children.
A PWD official said that there had been a sudden influx of tourists even as the works were started. Tourism Officer, Tiruchi, P. Pushparaj, said that additional facilities were also being planned .
