Dalit girl’s father alleges his involvement, issue raised in Assembly
College student went missing on October 22
Driver in police remand
LUCKNOW: In a quick reaction to allegations that her Ministerial colleague Anand Sen Yadav was involved in the kidnapping of a Dalit girl, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday recommended a CBI inquiry and simultaneously asked him to submit his resignation. The resignation of Mr. Yadav, Minister of State for Food Processing, has been sent to Governor T.V. Rajeswar.
Shashi (23), a third year Law student in the Saket PostGraduate Degree College, Faizabad, went missing from the city on October 22. The next day her father Yogendra Prasad lodged a first information report, at the Ayodhya police station, that she was missing. She has not been found till date.
According to police sources, another FIR saying Shashi was allegedly kidnapped was lodged on October 31.
On Tuesday, her father, talking to newsmen here, accused the Minister, his driver Vijay Sen Yadav, and another girl Seema Azad of involvement in the kidnap.
The driver, who was named in the October 31 FIR, was arrested but was released. His bail in another criminal case was cancelled and he again went to jail.
At a press conference later, Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh said Mr. Anand Sen Yadav resigned following allegations made by Shashi’s father and the Opposition but there was no evidence suggesting his involvement in the kidnap case.
Confirming that Vijay Sen Yadav was now in police remand, the Cabinet Secretary said the driver had reportedly stated that Shashi was with him and she committed suicide by jumping into the Gomti river (in the neighbouring Sultanpur district). However, it was not a recorded statement and he would be interrogated by the police, the Cabinet Secretary said.
Mr. Shashank Shekhar Singh said Mr. Prasad had on October 31 written to the Faizabad Divisional Commissioner, requesting the official to take immediate action in the case.
In his letter (copies of which were distributed to the press), Mr. Prasad alleged that the driver was involved in the kidnapping of his daughter. He also complained that the police were showing no interest in tracing her.
Earlier, raising the issue in the Assembly, Leader of the Opposition Mulayam Singh claimed that the girl was pregnant and said the Minister’s driver was allegedly involved in the case. Mr. Singh demanded the dismissal of the Minister who, he said, was now claiming that the driver was not known to him.
Mr. Anand Sen Yadav is the third Minister, after Sudhir Goel and Raghunath Prasad, to resign from the Mayawati Government. Son of the Bahujan Samaj Party MP from Faizabad Mitra Sen Yadav, he is the ruling party MLA from Milkipur.
The father-son duo is allegedly involved in several criminal cases. When the Mayawati Government came to power on May 13, 2007, Mr Yadav, who was made Minister of State, was unable to take the oath of office as he was in jail, in another case. He was sworn in after his release.
Both Mr. Mitra Sen Yadav and Mr. Anand Sen Yadav were earlier Samajwadi Party MP and MLA from Faizabad and Milkipur respectively, before crossing over to the BSP.
