Kochi: Palarivattom bypass junction witnessed tense moments as people led by K. Babu, MLA, obstructed traffic following the death of an employee of Kochi Refinery Limited (KRL), who was hit by a Highway Police jeep.

The incident occurred at 12 noon on Saturday. P.R. Chandrasekharan Nair, 55, was riding his scooter when the police vehicle knocked him down. The police team were chasing a truck carrying sand.

The people became disturbed alleging delay on the part of the police team in taking the accident victim to the hospital. Even though he was taken to Ernakulam Medical Centre, he died of injuries by 2 p.m. He had serious head injuries, hospital sources said.

Mr. Babu said the police party led by Palarivattom Sub-Inspector V.S. Navas used force to disperse the mob and also used abusive language. This led the protestors demanding action against the police officials. However, the crowd dispersed after the City Police Commissioner gave assurance to Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy, who arrived at the scene by then, that action would be taken before 4 p.m. on Sunday after conducting an inquiry, Mr. Babu said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Control Room) M.P. Scaria was asked to inquire into the incident, said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner. A case has been registered against Santhosh Kumar, driver of the police jeep.
