in 1998

BANGALORE: Luck ran out for serial-murder accused Shyam alias Rod Shyam (45), who escaped from the Kolar Central Prison on August 27. Shyam was captured by the police along with four others as they were busy planning their future moves.

Shyam is an accused in 27 murder cases and several instances of dacoity along the national highway.

City Police Commissioner Neelam Achuta Rao on Monday said Shyam after escaping from jail met four associates of underworld don Ravi Poojary.

Shyam and the four Poojary associates — Kaviraj, Vijay Kumar, Anand and Prakash — hired a sports utility vehicle (SUV) from a travel agent in Salem ostensibly to visit the Yercaud hill station. On the way, they allegedly drugged the driver and threw him out of the vehicle near Mettur.

Mr. Rao did not give operational details of the investigation. He merely said the movements of the five were traced to Krishnagiri, Salem, Mettur, Ooty and Kolar, leading to their arrest.

Kaviraj had been earlier arrested in connection with the killing of two members of the staff of Shabnam Developers in 9th Block, Jayanagar, in February. Kaviraj and Shyam got to know each other in Kolar prison. Kaviraj was released on bail. Shyam who was advised by Kaviraj to escape from the prison joined him soon after.

Shyam, a resident of Hoskote in Bangalore Rural district, and his associate, Ravi, were first arrested by the Vijayanagar police in 1998. The two have allegedly committed 27 murders for gain in and around Bangalore and Tumkur. Among their victims was Suparna, an ANZ Grindlays Bank officer, who was murdered in Sanjaynagar. The sensational case is in court, the police said.
