Marungapuri residents shocked at move to bring the constituency under Manapparai

Musiri taluk now comes under Musiri, Manachanallur and Thuraiyur constituencies

TIRUCHI: The redrawing the boundaries of the Assembly constituencies, as set forth in the Delimitation Commission’s notification, has evoked a mixed response in Tiruchi district. Though the district will have nine constituencies as before, the boundaries of some segments have undergone significant changes. The nomenclatures of some constituencies have also been changed.

The Marungapuri, Thottiyam and Uppilliyapuram (ST) constituencies have been abolished, and Manapparai, Manachanallur and Thuraiyur (SC), created.

While political and trade circles of Manapparai are happy with the revival of the Assembly segment after four decades, Marungapuri residents have expressed shock at the decision to abolish the constituency and bring it under Manapparai. The revived Manapparai segment will now include the Manapparai municipality, the Ponnampatti town panchayat and part of the Manapparai taluk.

The gram sabha of Marungapuri village has adopted a resolution opposing the change in nomenclature. “We have no objection to being clubbed with Manapparai, but the constituency’s name should be retained as Marungapuri,” says Amaravathy Shanmugam, a Congress functionary.

Residents of Thottiyam are also unhappy over the move to abolish the constituency and bring the taluk under the Musiri segment. They are also sore over Thottiyam being attached to the Perambalur Lok Sabha constituency. The Musiri taluk now comes under three different constituencies — Musiri, Manachanallur and Thuraiyur — despite objections to the trifurcation by the locals. The Manachanallur taluk and parts of the Musiri taluk would form the new Manachanallur constituency. The Thuraiyur (SC) segment would include the Thuraiyur taluk and parts of Musiri.

Tiruchi-I and Tiruchi-II have been renamed Tiruchi East and Tiruchi West. While Tiruchi East comprises wards 8-26, 33-35, 37, 38 and 43, Tiruchi West covers wards 39-42 and 44-60 of the Tiruchi Corporation.

The Lalgudi constituency remains almost unchanged covering the entire taluk. Wards 7, 27-32 and 36 of the Corporation, parts of the Tiruchi and Srirangam taluks and the Tiruverambur, Koothapar and Thuvakudi town panchayats come under the Tiruverambur segment.
