NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday authorised party president Sonia Gandhi to finalise the party's nominees for President and Vice-President.
Senior Congress leader M.L. Fotedar moved this proposal and others seconded it, general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said,
The meeting of the top policy-making body here did not discuss any name. Asked whether the Congress decided to field a candidate for both posts, he said it would depend on the outcome of the talks with the United Progressive Alliance constituents.
As for the Bharatiya Janata Party's suggestion of consensus, he said the candidate for President would first be discussed first within the UPA.
Some key UPA allies are meeting on Wednesday. According to reports, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is expected to be here for the meeting to be attended by leaders of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Nationalist Congress Party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Communist Party of India.

Union Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Monday said his Lok Jan Shakti Party would support the Congress nominee for President. "I've given my opinion and now it is for Congress president Sonia Gandhi to decide on the UPA nominee."
