TIRUCHI: A station identification display board has been installed inside the II air-conditioned sleeper coach of the Tiruchi-Ernakulam Tea Garden Express.

Though the facility has already been introduced in the AC chair cars of the Vaigai and Pallavan Super Fast Express trains, this is the first time in the Southern Railway that the board has been provided in an AC sleeper compartment.

The global positioning system-based facility will now enable passengers in the coach to know the train's current location. An antenna fixed atop the coach will receive the signals from the satellite and the system will decode the latitude and longitude of the place and identify the station.

Railway officials here said the system would display the station name in English on the Light Emitting Diode board.

Once the train leaves a station, it will show the approaching station's name.

The system will have names of all the stations where the train will stop between Tiruchi and Ernakulam.

It will also indicate the names of important stations where the train will cross but not stop.

The board will display the time when the train leaves a station.

The facility would be of great use to passengers, as they would know the station's name sitting in the coach, an official said.

The LED display boards, weighing nearly one kilogram each, have been set up on both sides of the coach at a cost of Rs.1.05 lakh.
