NEW DELHI: A 50-year-old man who allegedly criminally assaulted the five-year-old daughter of his landlord at Nithari in neighbouring Noida was beaten to death by angry locals on Tuesday. The girl has been admitted to Kailash Hospital.

The girl along with some other children was playing outside her house around 1-30 p.m. when Arjun, an ice-cream vendor who had been living in a room rented out by her father, took her along on the pretext of treating her to an ice-cream. He then allegedly criminally assaulted her.

Hearing her screams, the girl's uncle rushed to the spot and raised an alarm, at which Arjun tried to flee. But local residents soon gathered there, overpowered him and beat him up severely. By the time the police arrived, a badly bruised Arjun had lost consciousness. He was whisked away to the Civil Hospital in Ghaziabad.

The girl was rushed to the Noida District Hospital with serious injuries.

After a medical examination, she was shifted to Kailash Hospital where she was operated upon.

The police said Arjun succumbed to his injuries at the Civil Hospital in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, angry locals gathered near the Nithari police post demanding that the police hand over the accused to them.

They blocked traffic on the adjoining road for over three hours demanding deployment of more police personnel in the area. They dispersed after being informed that Arjun had died.

The incident comes three months after the shocking serial killings of women and children of Nithari village at the Noida Sector 31 residence of businessman Moninder Singh Pandher came to light. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the murders were committed by Moninder's domestic help Surender Koli.
