New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minsiter M. Karunanidhi has welcomed the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's order. "Justice has been done to the State," he said here.
Asked for his reaction, he said: "We welcome the award. We hope Karnataka will implement the Tribunal's order."
He recalled that over time he had discussed the Cauvery issue with 11 Karnataka Chief Ministers, since 1968. Only now has a favourable decision been arrived at.
He said that as far as Tamil Nadu was concerned, the Cauvery was the lifeline for the people in general and farmers in particular. It was the only river the State had to rely on.
But Karnataka had several other major rivers to depend on for its irrigation and other needs. Hence, Karnataka should implement the award, he said.
Asked whether Tamil Nadu would file a clarificatory petition before the Tribunal, Mr. Karunanidhi said he would consult irrigation experts and engineers, lawyers, leaders of political parties, farmers and others at the earliest in order to decide on the future course of action.
