Durai Murugan cites PWD report

CHENNAI: The Andhra Pradesh Government does not seem to be taking any steps for constructing a check dam across the Palar river, according to an inspection report submitted by Tamil Nadu Public Works Department officials.

Citing the report, Durai Murugan, PWD Minister, said that as soon as the news items on the construction of the check dam appeared, he wrote to the Irrigation Minister of the neighbouring State. The Chief Secretary got in touch with his counterpart. The PWD officials were sent to the site where the proposed check dam was stated to come up.

Mr. Durai Murugan also recalled that the Ministers, M.K. Stalin and K. Ponmudi, called on the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in Hyderabad in August last and discussed the subject. Then, the latter assured the Ministers that his government would consult Tamil Nadu if it had to take action on building the check dam.

Poser to Jayalalithaa

Joining issue with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the PWD Minister blamed the previous AIADMK regime for having remained lax in the matter.

He wanted to know whether she, while in power, had ever raised the matter with the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister. "Or, did she ever send any Minister to Andhra Pradesh?"
