NEW DELHI: CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat on Tuesday reacted sharply to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi’s poser how the CPI(M) — which was saying it was opposed to communal forces — had allied with AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, who had supported “kar seva” at Ayodhya.

The CPI(M) MP said: “He has no locus standi to say so because it was Mr. Karunanidhi who had been doing kar seva to the BJP when his party was part of the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre. Even during the worst ‘Gujarat genocide’ during February-March 2002, the DMK was very much with the BJP.”

‘Nothing wrong’

Talking to The Hindu here, Ms. Karat said the Left parties were trying to build an alliance of parties that opposed the “communal policies of the BJP” and “opportunistic and pro-imperialist policies of the Congress” and there was nothing wrong in joining with Ms. Jayalalithaa as she had been opposing both the forces.
