CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation is set to celebrate its 320th anniversary with cultural programmes, a vintage photo exhibition, sports competitions and speeches by prominent citizens of the city.
Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate the exhibition of 320 photographs on the evolution of the city on Sunday morning (September 28) at the Ripon Building.
Folk music, dances by students Corporation schools and a formal ceremony will be held at Kalaivanar Arangam the same evening.
Former Mayors including Era. Sambandam, V. Balasundaram, Kamatchi Jeyaraman and R. Arumugam will be honoured.
N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu; industrialist Venu Srinivasan; actors Revathy and Sathyaraj, Exnora International founder M.B. Nirmal, former Indian cricket captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth and former Chief Secretary T.V. Antony are some of the guests who will speak at the commemorative ceremony.
Mayors in other municipal corporations in the State have also been invited.
On Monday, the Ripon Building was bathed in the colours of floodlights as technicians tested various shades to light up the campus of the civic headquarters.
The Corporation was inaugurated on September 29, 1688, under a Royal Charter issued by King James II on December 30, 1687. It is the oldest in India.
