Relief for saturated Dindigul route
No need for stabling at wayside stations
MADURAI: The commissioning of newly converted Manamadurai-Karaikudi broad gauge section has taken the stress out of the saturated Madurai-Dindigul-Tiruchi section. The Southern Railway has started operating goods trains between Madurai and Tiruchi through the new railway line during peak passenger train traffic movement.
The Manamadurai-Tiruchi section was thrown open for rail traffic on July 2 following completion of gauge conversion between Manamadurai and Karaikudi.
“Though diversion of goods trains through the new BG line is cumbersome, it ensures running of goods trains without any need for stabling them at wayside stations for longer hours,” Madurai Divisional Railway Manager Hemant Kumar told The Hindu. Once the movement of express trains begins on the Madurai-Tiruchi section, goods trains had to be stopped at some wayside stations for five to six hours. But, diverting them on the new line helped the goods train keep moving on, though it was a little bit circuitous route (distance between Tiruchi and Madurai via Dindigul is 163 km and via Karaikudi and Manamadurai is 198 km)
Though it was a circuitous route, goods trains need not wait for long as the track was almost free. The additional efforts taken for reversing the goods train formation was worth the time saved, Mr. Hemant Kumar said.
