Srinagar: Five militants, including an infiltrator from across the Line of Control and a ‘district commander’ of the Jaish-e-Mohammad, were killed in two separate operations by security personnel here, a police spokesman said on Saturday.
Based on a tip-off, a joint operation was conducted by the police and the Army in Kupwara district. Four militants including the JeM leader were killed, the spokesman said.
As the police zeroed in on the target area, militants opened fire and the personnel retaliated.
Of the four killed, two were identified as the self-styled district commander Amjad Bhai and LeT militant Abu Saifullah, the spokesman said, adding that both belonged to Pakistan.
Terming the killing of Amjad Bhai a big success, he said the slain militant had been active in the area since 2001. He was also involved in the recent abduction and the killing of two policemen in Lolab area this month.
The identity of the others is being ascertained, the spokesman said.
The Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Keran sector of Kupwara district and killed an unidentified militant, he said. — PTI
