NEW DELHI: Within hours of the announcement of the Union budget, a large number of farmers from Delhi and Haryana led by Delhi Congress president J.P. Agarwal converged on 10 Janpath.
They had come to thank United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for the waiver of farmers’ loans.
The farmers, who included a number of Congress MPs, also burst firecrackers and smeared ‘gulal’ (colours) on each other.
On Akbar Road, party leaders and workers atop tractor trolleys and other vehicles celebrated the “momentous announcement” to the accompaniment of drums and bands.
During the meeting with the Congress leadership, Outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar and Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda expressed their gratitude to Ms. Gandhi for helping out the poor and marginal farmers in their hour of crisis. They said the loan waiver would help the farmers come out of the debt-trap.
