It aims to provide a thrust to polytechnic education in this region
TIRUCHI: Tiruchi Anna University has decided to start part-time B.E. programmes in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and B.Tech in Information Technology, from the coming academic year.
These three-and-a-half-year programmes with seven semesters are meant for diploma-holders with a minimum of a year's work experience, according to V. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor. The university expects the part-time programmes to provide a thrust to polytechnic education in this region. The university will put in place a rigid screening process to ensure merit-based admissions. It has considered essential a standardised process for testing students from various institutions. The intake will be 60 for each programme, said Dr. Ramachandran, adding that admissions will be made for the four programmes at the start of the calendar year as well. The regular classes will be held for three hours in the evening for six days a week.
The Tiruchi Anna university is re-starting these programmes that are being offered for several years by its parent university at Chennai. The National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi wound up its part-time B.E. programmes two years ago. The university has created opportunities for guest faculty members to upgrade their qualifications. "We will go for outsourcing of 50 to 60 faculty members from industry. Subject specialists and visiting professors will be roped in for part-time and regular programmes also," Dr. Ramachandran said.
