ASI Ravinderpal Singh was trying to stop a group from harassing his daughter
A local leader of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab and one of his associates were arrested near the Pakistan border on Thursday, a day after he shot dead a police official who came to the defence of his daughter when she was being harassed, in Amritsar.
After a major operation, the police arrested the main accused, Ranjit Singh Rana — who shot dead Assistant Sub-Inspector Ravinderpal Singh in full public view — from a village near the border. Two of his accomplices are at large.
According to reports, Mr. Singh, who was in uniform, was shot on Wednesday afternoon when he was confronted by a group of eve teasers led by Rana and his associates, who had been harassing his daughter for a couple of days.
