City Police on Thursday claimed to have solved 33 out of the 46 cases of chain snatching reported in the last five months.

Detention of 10 habitual offenders under the Goondas Act had drastically reduced chain snatching incidents, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) K.Ferozekhan Abdullah said.

He said 17 accused were arrested and 688 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs.11 lakh were recovered. “Besides the 33 cases reported till May, we solved five cases reported in the past and recovered 380 grams of gold jewellery worth Rs.5 lakh this year.”

The efforts made by the Crime Wing police in December 2012 resulted in improved crime detection rate for the year — from 60 per cent till November to 64 per cent at year-end.
