Leander Paes beats World No. 2 Pete Sampras 6-3, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals of the Pilot Pen ATP championship in New Haven.

27th Aug

India's cricket sensation Sachin Tendulkar, has an audience with the legend, Sir Don Bradman, at the latter's 90th birthday celebrations in Adelaide.

29th Aug

Sachin Tendulkar receives the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award; Joginder Singh Saini, the Dronacharya award, while several other leading sporstmen receive Arjuna awards from President, K.R. Narayanan in Delhi.

31st Aug

Muthiah Muralitharan bags nine wickets for match-figures of 16 for 220 in the one-off Test at the Oval to help Sri Lanka to its first Test win against England. He is the third to have captured 16 wickets in a Test match (Bob Massie and Hirwani were the others). Only Jim Laker (19 wickets) and Syd Barnes (17) have captured more.
