The Russian President, Mr. Boris Yeltsin suspends the country's Prosecutor-General in what is seen as an attempt to suppress investigation into corruption charges against the President's relatives and top Kremlin officials.

Cruise missiles from U.S. ships hit the heart of Belgrade, destroying the buildings housing the Serbian and Yugoslav Federal Interior Ministries.

Apr. 5

NATO aircraft launch fresh attacks on targets in Kosovo, bombing the Slatina airfield south-east of the provincial capital Pristina and the Grijilane area further east.

Yugoslavia declares unilateral ceasefire in Kosovo, offering to take back refugees and work towards a political solution by negotiating with the moderate Kosovo leader, Mr. Ibrahim Rugova. U.S. rejects truce offer.

The NATO responds to the Yugoslav ceasefire in Kosovo with an intense barrage of bombs and cruise missile attacks against military and civilian targets across Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro.

Mr. Anwar Ibrahim, deposed Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, is found guilty of four separate but inter-related counts of abuse of authority and sentenced to prison to serve a six-year concurrent conviction.

The former Pakistan Prime Minister, Ms. Benazir Bhutto and her husband, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari, are sentenced to five years in jail and disqualified from public life after being found guilty of corruption by the Lahore High Court.
