The ruling CPI(M) in Calcutta supports the candidature of former Army Chief for RS poll. Jul. 2 The Indian Army launches a three pronged attack on Kargil. India is firm on Pakistan pullout from Kargil. U.S. panel rejects Pakistan call for plebiscite in Kashmir. Congress(I) leaders stage demonstration at Kandeleru reservoir, disrupt release of Telugu Ganga water to Chennai. The Gujarat Government cancels the land allotted to a private charitable trust of Mr. Shankar Sinh Waghela. Mr. P. Rama Rao is the new Vice-Chancellor of Hyderabad University. In Jammu and Kashmir, nine people are killed by unidentified militants. The Nationalist Congress Party criticises the BJP Government for not convening a RS session on Kargil issue. The National Security Advisor, Mr. Brijesh Mishra, does not rule out the possibility of India's crossing LoC. Nepal detains seven LTTE militants. Thackeray backs Kapil Dev's stand that India should stop playing cricket with Pakistan even abroad following the Kargil and asks film actor Mr. Dilip Kumar to return the `Nishan-e-Pakistan' award he received from Pakistan. Jul. 4 The Indian Army recaptures the Tiger Hill after a 11 hours assault, hoists the tricolour atop the 16,500 ft. peak. Over 500 children of Kargil migrants take out a procession to Batalik in a show of solidarity with the Indian army. Jul. 5 The Army consolidates its hold in Dras. A joint statement issued by Mr. Clinton and Mr. Sharif, says that Pakistan agrees to pull out its forces from Indian side of LoC. The Congress(I) welcomes the statement. Two inaugurated buses from Dhaka arrive in Calcutta. Jul. 6 The Indian High Commission staff member Mr. Yog Raj Vij, who was beaten up and obducted by Pakistani intelligence operatives, is released. India strongly condemns this assault. The Pakistan Army Chief, General Musharaff says it is up to Mujahideen to quit the Indian side at the LoC. Jul. 7 The Indian Army recaptures Jubar height in the Batalik sector. The Delhi High Court cancels the bail of Vilas Yadav, an accused in the model Jessica Lal murder case. The crew of the North Korean Ship, which was detained at the Kandla Part, are arrested. Jul. 8 Shiv Sena activists attack the office of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in New Delhi to protest against the manhandling of Indian High Commission officials in Islamabad. The bodies of 12 soldiers who died in Kargil battle, are brought to New Delhi. So far 321 soldiers are killed and 476 wounded in operation Vijay. Jul. 9 Army reaches LoC in Batalik sector. Jul. 10 The Mujahideen militants reject the appeal of Pakistan Defence Committee of Cabinet (CoC) to pull out of the Indian side of LoC. But Pakistan cabinet claims that the militants respond positively to their appeal. 197 Field Regiment are honoured for their valour in Kargil. The Delhi police arrest Mohammad Javed alias Babu Bhai, an accused in the Jain Hawala case. Jul. 11 The Election Commission announces the date of LS polls, which will be held from September 4 to October 3. Pakistan begins pullout from LoC in the Kargil sector. The Indian Army recaptures more posts in Mushkoh Valley. Jul. 12 India sets a deadline for intruders withdrawal from Kargil, announces suspension of air strikes. Jul. 13 Militants attack the residential complex of Border Security Force (BSF) in Madar village near Bandipur and take 12 persons as hostages after killing four. The Lashkar-i-Taiba, a frontline Pakistani militant outfit, claims responsibility for that incident. Floods claim 15 more lives in Bihar. Pakistan says no deadline for withdrawal is given. Jul. 14 Congress(I) withdraws support to Bansi Lal Government. The National Security Guard (NSG) commandos free 12 hostages at the BSF camp. Mr. Arvind Dave is appointed Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. Jul. 15 The Maharashtra Assembly is dissolved. Jul. 18 The Army discovers Pakistani documents indicating presence of chemical weapons in the Kaskar area and launches searching operations there. Jul. 20 In Haryana 12 Ministers quit from Bansi Lal's Ministry on the eve of crucial trust vote. Militants kill 19 in Jammu, this is the fourth massacre in three weeks. Jul. 21 The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr. Bansi Lal quits before seeking a trust vote; and rebels form a separate party. The Janata Dal splits under Mr. Deve Gowda and Mr. Sharad Yadav. The latter group to support NDA. Pakistan intensifies shelling in Kargil sector. The Indo U.S. Extradition Treaty comes into force. Jul. 22 The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr. J. H. Patel, recommends dissolution of the Assembly and the Governor, Mr. Khurshid Alam Khan accepts it. Earlier Mr. Patel drops eight Ministers including the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Siddharamiah. Indian Army destroys six enemy bunkers in the Mushkoh Valley. The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr. Jyoti Basu is selected for the first Mother Teresa International Award. Jul. 23 Mr. Om Prakash Chautala, leader of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) is invited to form the Government in Haryana after he proves the majority of support of 53 MLAs in the 87-member House. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) unearths Rs. 38,297 cr. lottery scam in Nagaland. Flood situation is still grim in Bihar and Assam. The toll rises to 118 in Bihar. Meanwhile incessant rains continue to lash Goa affecting normal life, vehicular traffic as well as the Konkan Railway. India and U.K. sign Rs. 547 cr. grant for two projects in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Jul. 24 The Vajpayee Government orders a probe into the events leading to Pakistani intrusion in Kargil. Mr. Om Prakash Chautala is sworn in the Chief Minister of Haryana, and will seek trust vote on July 27. Jul. 25 The Indian Army clears of the Pakistani intruders in the Dras Sector. Senior Congress leader and member of the dissolved Lok Sabha, Mr. Mufti Mohammed Sayeed quits Congress and floats a new party. Jul. 26 The Director General of Military Operations, Lt. Gen. N. C. Vij, announces eviction of Pakistani intruders is complete. While Pakistan claims its Army still holds some strategic heights in Kargil. Japan agrees to extend a grant of 909 million yen (Rs. 33.15 crores) to UNICEF project to eradicate polio in India. Jul. 27 The Election Commission denies permission to the Vajpayee Government to grant DTH licence to Doordarshan and also to amend the cable TV Networks Act (Regulation) 1995. Mr. Chautala wins trust vote in Haryana. The Arunachal Pradesh Assembly is dissolved. Jul. 28 The Shiv Sena president, Mr. Bal Thackeray is banned from voting and contesting in any election for six years from December 11, 1995 on the recommendations of the Election Commission. Jul. 29
