The Central Board of Secondary Education answers questions relating to its examinations from The Hindu readers.

My daughter is in Class VII and her second language is Hindi. As we may relocate to Germany, we would like to know whether you offer German as a second language for Class X Board examination.

Yes, CBSE offers German as one of the languages in its curriculum at the secondary and senior secondary levels. You may refer to CBSE Secondary Curriculum - 2008 (Vol. II) for details. It is also available on the CBSE website www.cbse.nic.in. In Class X, another language could be either English or Hindi.

I am in Class XII. I want to know about the treatment of Joint Life Policy (Death of a partner) in Accountancy. Different teachers have provided me different answers. Is there interest on debentures in our syllabus?

At the time of death of a partner, the policy matures. The total amount received on maturity (not the surrender value) is credited in the capital accounts of all partners including the deceased partner.

In Accountancy syllabus, interest on debentures finds its place in two units on Debentures and Cash Flow Statement.

Can we write the Class XIIBoard examination with any other blue pen than the one with ink? Can we write Part-A question in Maths after writing Part-B? Can you prescribe the syllabus for atoms lesson in Physics as the school has not taught us the atomic spectra part of the lesson? Should the answers for biology contain exact words from the textbook that schools prescribe? It is difficult to mug up, especially ecology.

If what you mean by ``any other blue pen than the one with ink'' is use of ballpoint or gel pen, the answer is yes. You can use such pens to write the Class XII Board examination. However, you should not use red or green pens to write answers.

You may follow any order while answering the questions. However, you should mention the section and question number against each of your answers.

Atomic Spectra is not included in the CBSE syllabus. The syllabus can be downloaded from the CBSE website, www.cbse.nic.in.

Your answers in any subject need not be in exactly the same words as given in the prescribed textbook. You need not mug up answers from the textbook. After studying the lessons and understanding the concepts you may write the answers in your own words.

Can we start the paper (Class X Maths) from Section C and attempt Section B and A in that order?

Yes, you may start solving the question papers in mathematics from any section of the question paper. However, it is advisable to attempt those questions in the beginning in which you are more confident and comfortable.

Is it compulsory to study diagrams from the text or can we draw diagrams from outside the text for Biology in Class X?

You may draw scientifically correct, neatly drawn and properly labelled diagrams relevant to the questions asked in the examination from any source even outside NCERT textbooks.

Could you let me know where I could get the book titled, Secondary School Curriculum-2007 Volume-I. Is it available online?

Secondary School Curriculum- 2007 Vol. I can be bought from the CBSE Regional Office at Chennai. It can also be downloaded from the CBSE website - www.cbse.nic.in.

In `Optical Instruments' (Physics), are only the four defects of vision included in the syllabus? Is `simple microscope' also included?

Yes, the `defects of vision' are included in the syllabus whereas `simple microscope' has been deleted from the syllabus.

For Class XII, could you please clarify a doubt about the use of logarithmic, annuity and exponential tables during the mathematics examination? Will the invigilators supply logarithmic, annuity, binomial probabilities and values of e raised to the power of lamda, during the exam? Or will the question itself indicate the values to be used?

The printed logarithmic tables are available and supplied in the examination hall. However, the desired data related to questions on annuity, exponential tables, binomial probabilities and values of e are generally indicated in the question itself, wherever need be.

What does "Qualitative idea only" mentioned for some topics in the syllabus for Class X Science mean? Do we have to refer books/guides other than the NCERT textbooks for Class X?

The qualitative idea means that it does not require mathematical treatment of the related concepts. Besides no numericals will be asked related to these topics. The Board recommends only NCERT textbooks for its examination. However, for more details and wider understanding of the content areas, the students may refer to any reference material of their choice. However, the scope of the syllabus for the CBSE examination has to be kept in mind by consulting the Board's documents such as Secondary School Curriculum and Sample Question Papers.

I am in Class X and I want to know the correct procedure for answering English question paper section-wise. Can we start answering in any way (Section D followed by C,B and A)?

The CBSE provides 15 minutes of extra time for candidates to read the question papers during the examinations. You can use this time to read the questions with concentration. This will help you decide for which section you can give your best answers. Besides saving time, it will improve your confidence as you proceed. You may answer the sections in any sequence. But ensure that you write the section and question number properly against each of your answers.

There had been a revision in the pattern of science examination by assigning marks for practicals. I want to know the basis in which the questions in the science practical paper will be asked. Please mention some reference books/ other materials for covering the practical portion of Class X, 2007.

Assessment of practical skills through multiple-choice questions has been introduced for the first time in Board's examination. This has been done primarily to ensure that the students do science practicals given in the syllabus very carefully during the academic session. All the questions asked in the question paper in testing of science practical skills will be based on the practicals included in the syllabus. The paper will not include any questions which are theory-based.

The Board has published a complete document titled `Assessment of Practical Skills in Science and Technology' for Class X and the same is available in printed form as well as on the CBSE website www.cbse.nic.in.

This document can be downloaded from the list of downloadable publications of the Board. The answers to these questions are also given in the same document. Besides, the Board has uploaded more multiple choice practical skill-based questions in its website You may refer to all such materials. It is hoped that if you have done all the practicals included in the syllabus during the academic session carefully, there is no reason why you will not perform well in this paper in the coming examination.

I am a Class X student. There are so many percentages (tables and places) given in the Geography textbook. Should I study all of them by heart?

Statistical questions on percentages given in tables, etc. will not be asked directly. Tables are meant for interpreting certain useful conclusions. Candidates may be required to give certain important percentages such as percentage of agricultural land or urban vs. rural population or people below poverty line, for supporting their answers. There is no need to cram all the percentages given in the textbook.

I am in Class X. Are there more types of problems in income tax other than what is prescribed in the NCERT textbook? There is a rumour that the Board might give a problem on finding the salary when other details are provided. If there are more types, where will I find the method to solve such problems?

CBSE prescribes only NCERT textbook as a standard reference book at the secondary level. Only the types of questions that are being included in the NCERT textbook will be asked.

No problem to find the salary with other details as inputs will be asked in the Board's examinations under income tax calculation.

Should Ace be considered as face card or number card while solving the problems in the probability chapter?

Ace should be considered as a number card.

I am a Class X student. Do we need to write the steps of construction of pie chart as answer to the questions asking the construction of pie chart?

Yes. You must write the steps of construction of pie chart.
