Soul stirring

Soul Sound, a renowned choir from Sri Lanka, will perform tomorrow

The choir members are flying to India straight from Graz, Austria, after participating in the fifth World Choir Games. From Sri Lanka, Soul Sounds made their country proud by winning two golds and one silver medal at the Gospel and Spiritual Open and Open Popular Choral Music.

Organised by The High Commission for Sri Lanka, The Neemarana Music Foundation and India-Sri Lanka Foundation, the famous music ensemble will perform in the Capital on Sunday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Ashok Place at 7.30 p.m. The members will enthral the audience with choral singing, with interludes of light western music.

Soul Sounds is backed by Neranjan de Silva on keyboards, Christopher Prins on drums and Soundarie David on piano. Jerome L. de Silva is the group’s artistic director.

The globe-trotting choir has numerable awards and shows to its credit. Members of the choir were chosen to sing for the 1997 Hollywood movie Mother Teresa - In the name of God’s Poor starring Geraldine Chaplin. The choir won two silver medals at the fourth World Choir Games held in Xiamen, China in 2006. In February 2007, Soul Sounds performed for audiences in Australia, which marked their first international concert tour.

“The secret of the choir’s success seems to be the fact that the girls love what they are doing,” is how Neranjan de Silva sums up the band’s performance.
