On a mission

Vasundhara Das on ‘Mission Ustad’ and more

Different Tunes Actress and singer Vasundhara Das

Thanks to reality shows, these days the entire music industry wants to be seen on television.

How can Vasundhara Das, who is known to pick and choose her ‘roles’ judiciously, be one among them?

A participant in Mission Ustad on 9X where she teams up with Mohit Chauhan to create compositions, Vasundhara avers she in not in the show to be in the limelight.

“I have never done that. It is just that the show has a social purpose and challenges me as a musician. It pushes the boundaries of creativity.”

The goals

The show was launched in partnership with the United Nations to highlight the eight Millennium Development Goals earmarked as part of the United Millennium Campaign, which was launched by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in 2002.

The goals include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Some of the songs that will be created during the show would be part of an album to be released in assistance with the United Nations.

On the process of composing a song with Mohit, Vasundhara quips, “Well, he is from the mountains, I am from the plateau so there are bound to be differences. He is very calm and cool while I like speaking out my mind . So there is a lot of give and take! At times there is frustration, at times we feel ecstatic.” With an eminent jury including A.R. Rahman and Javed Akhtar, and participants like Kailash Kher, who also likes to speak out his mind , lots of editing must be going on.

Vasundhara laughs. “There are different points of view but everybody is working towards a common goal. Every week we work on a different issue. So, the novelty factor is there.”

Vasundhara is more of a twinkling star. She impressed us with her performance in films like Hey Ram and Monsoon Wedding only to disappear.

She made us rock with songs like “Shakalaka Baby” and “It’s the time to disco”, only to vanish again. Not to talk about her growing size! Isn’t she ambitious?

“There are just too many ambitious people around. By the way I keep busy with my stage performances. This is what I like the most, as it gives you instant gratification. I am a musician first. Films like Hey Ram and Monsoon Wedding happen once in a career. I am lucky that both happened.”

And Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana? “Well, sometimes your judgement goes wrong. At the script level, it looked decent. And then the charm of working with Rekhaji was there. These days, novel subjects are being tested again, and I am game for them.”

Anyone listening?
