Of poise and poetry

Ghazal singer Penaz Masani on music and more

A picture of poise and beauty, Penaz Masani loses little time in establishing a rapport with the audience.

Penaz, who has cut more than 20 discs, says she is in love with singing simply because it allows her to interact with her fans. The singer was born in a family steeped in music, and was discovered by legendary composer Jaidev in 1978.

Penaz stresses the importance of ghazal and its status in society today. “Ghazal singing has achieved a status, which is good for us singers. There is no medley, no pop, just plain soulful singing.”

What is the relevance of ghazal singing today? “It is not just another three-minute song. The beauty of a ghazal can never fade because it is a tradition that has been kept alive through generations.”

Reflecting on her career, Penaz says that , “It has been a wonderful journey.” As for ghazals having been spared the trend of remixes, she says, “Thank God!”
