Made for each other A few cosy moments

The first same sex marriage confirmed at Sabbavaram near Visakhapatnam is not a solitary case as such relationships are growing due to popularity of Internet.

Ramana Kumari, who donned the role of groom and tied the mangalasutra to Laxmi (who was abandoned by her husband), says that they became close friends and later thought it is better to marry and stay together for better security.

Sarada Valley Development Society runs a helpline named `Nestham’ for treatment and counselling to homosexuals in Dondaparthi area of the city and another unnamed group gives counselling through postal service to homosexuals and lesbians through Dominick, Post Box No. 203, Visakhapatnam. Snehithudu Welfare Society also conducts a counselling programme in Daba Gardens.

“Such type of relationship is to some extent genetic. Studies have confirmed that brain orientation leads to complete homosexual/heterosexual relationships. Concrete genes have not been identified for such sexual contacts,” says Prof. G. Paddaiah of Department of Human Genetics, Andhra University.

However, according to doctors, there is steady increase in the number of sexually transmitted diseases due to sex by multiple partners by gays and lesbians.

“Though the number is growing, many are not willing to identify themselves due to the stigma attached to same sex relationships,” Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Additional District Medical and Health Officer (leprosy and HIV/AIDS) points out.
