Where design evolves

Young designers spin a new look that’s haute on sensibility and cool in attitude

When Evoluzione launched its in-house label “Laboratory”, you knew what to expect. The name was a give-away for a line that reflected an inventive combination of patterns and proportions. The silhouettes were experimental, the prints pain stakingly designed and the colour schemes carefully chosen. In all, a stylish pre-Fall line of West-inspired separates.

“Laboratory is an experiment, where the collective effort of a bunch of young designers working in various fields of specialisation such as prints, graphics, application and styling blends seamlessly. Usually, one designer takes the credit for a label. But ‘Laboratory’ offers a platform for young talent to explore the nuances of design as a team. We hope the label will reinvent itself with each season,” says Atul Malhotra, Design Director and partner of Evoluzione. (The designers include Mandira Bansal, Urvashi Tiwari and Priya Mani.)

The fun skirts, cropped tops, sleek shirts and slinky dresses in wispy fabrics such as silk-georgette and cotton stretch (all sourced from abroad) demonstrated the team’s practical approach to design. So here we have fashion that’s meant to be worn!

The line that has a French connection in terms of inspiration is broken up into three categories – Cannes, Provence and Tourist. While Cannes is about pin-up glamour, Covance reflects the countryside – classic and crafted. Tourist comes with whimsical touches.

Say designers Mandira and Urvashi at the launch, “The outfits are cosmopolitan. We have tried to create a line that’s romantic and feminine. The silhouettes are mixed and the prints have been developed with care. ‘Laboratory’ is about surreal colours and expanding moments… when night blurs into day.”

The clothes are deceptively simple. Go beyond the surface and you discover that it’s not just about cut and colour, but also the detailing. Pieces of fabric making good patterns, fabric plaits doubling as straps, touches of embroidery, experimental prints and surprises in the form of silhouettes.

Together, the designers have managed to spin a look that’s haute on sensibility and cool in attitude.

The creations priced at Rs. 2, 500 onwards is on display at Evoluzione, Khader Nawaz Khan Road.
