fashion, but designers Paras and Shalini of Geisha Designs have decided to create a world of fairies right here.
The duo's collection for the forthcoming Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring Summer-2007 promises to dress the customers as fairies. The collection is named Queen of Elphame.
Says Paras, "We are fond of collecting art works. One day we came across this 18th Century Scottish fantasy queen. When she entered the garden, elves and butterflies used to come out.
As we are known for feminine and romantic collections, we thought let's design for the queen for the next spring. We call it fragile fashion."
Fragile fabrics
The garment designs bring back childhood ideas of fairies sitting in a garden, flaunting their beauty.
Says Shalini, "The USP of the collection is that outfits are made of fragile fabrics. They are soothing and have a romantic feel to them, conjuring the image of a fairy."
Paras clarifies that describing fabrics as fragile doesn't mean they won't last.
"The look is fragile, otherwise the fabrics are quite sturdy. We have used organza, jersey and brasso. It's a nylon variant, which has leafy prints on it. It could be heated easily to form the pleats. Then there is viscose with eight per cent lycra, making it stretchable."
Paras states that all the fabrics `breathe' and have high absorbing power. Ruffles, ruches and appliqué embroidery are some of the other highlights of the collection.
"The silhouettes are mainly asymmetrical, the colours are aquatic and the focus is on layering," explains Paras.
The knee-length pleated skirts have layers in different colours and fabrics. "The tops take the shape of blouses with puff-de-sac. Then there are corsets and capris as well. Mainly we have used butterfly and dragonfly motifs but not in the direct form," he adds.
Accessories have always been Geisha's strength, and this time the duo has designed the footwear in lemon colour with butterflies attached to the straps. Calling the bags wearable, Paras says, "The clutch bags have key elements of clothes. Fabric folds in the form of flowers are pasted to the bags. There are belts with Persian embroidery."
