From the looms of Maheshwar
ETHEREAL Delightful Maheshwari
REHWA Society brings from the weavers of Maheshwar, `Tara', a special collection of saris, dupattas, fabrics and shawls in weaves and prints embellished with `mukaish' work and designed by Mira Sagar at Gertrude Hall, Lotus Club, on August 11 and 12 from 10.30 a.m to 7.30 p.m.
A 1,500 -year -old weaving tradition comes from the town of Maheshwar on the banks of the Narmada.
Resurrected by Richard and Sally Holkar to provide a living to the dying art of weaving of the town and bringing alive the old textile patterns of the royal palaces of Madhya Pradesh, Maheshwar handlooms are 48" in width and are a blend of silk and cotton with silk yarn. The border is usually 2.5 inches with geometric designs. The `pallav' is woven separately on dobby looms rather than on jacquard looms.
Saris form fifty per cent of the production and the rest is yardage, dupattas and home accessories.
