SENSITIVE MATTERS! A model sporting a Deepika Govind outfit

From the streets of Janpath to the posh lanes of Hauz Khas, Delhiites have a variety of fashion to choose from. In the recent years, designers from across the country are also setting up their stores in the Capital. The latest to join the list is Bangalore-based designer Deepika Govind, who recently opened her store in the upmarket Khan Market.

New fabric

The launch was marked by a fashion show. Known for developing new fabrics like variations of silk, linen, lycra and aroma fabrics where the fragrance lasts up to 30 washes, the hallmark of her latest collection is `sensitive', a fabric developed by an Italian company, Eurojersey. Said to be made for "sensitive woman", besides being extraordinarily light and soft, `sensitive' also offers UV-ray protection and moisture control.

Says Deepika, "Fashion for me is a creative art. Developing new fabrics is a way to express that my clothes are given a lot of thought and detailing." Deepika shares that she has used `sensitive' for saris as well. Speaking about her style, the designer avers, "Colours are not my forte. Personally, I use a lot of texturing and detailing on a variety of fabrics to put together a piece."

The earthy dιcor of the store compliments her collection. The colour brown dominates the scene. On the second floor of the store is the Home Gallerie comprising home furnishings in leather and silver, objects d'art and semi-precious jewellery. On the choice of location, Deepika says, "I chose Khan Market for the old-world feel it has while catering to a very cosmopolitan crowd."

Deepika has also launched a limited menswear collection marked by her characteristic cuts and styling and the use of unique fabrics. Though she had also designed footwear for her show, she has for the moment tied up with Raspberry.
