A taste of Arabia

Try some Arabic cuisine with an Indian touch at Visge in New Delhi

Want to visit the land of Alladin? You really don't need to fly to the Middle East for now you can experience the mystique of Arabia right here in the city. Visge (meaning whisky in Arabic), a new restaurant located in South Extension, specialising in Arabic cuisine, promises to please your palate .

Positioned on the fourth level of Gourmet Gallery, Visge, with its contemporary yet ethnic dιcor, provides an ambience of serenity. Enhancing the ambience is the Arabic music played in the background. This 50-seater restaurant with its interesting dishes is a delight for food lovers.

"I wanted to offer something new and different to Delhi diners. So I came up with Arabic cuisine which is still not very popular in the Capital," says Dimple Kohli, the owner..

The USP is its Arabic cuisine with an Indian touch. "Keeping in view the taste preferences of Indians I have modified the Arabic cuisine by adding Indian flavour to it," adds Ashok, the chef. Hence, the menu prepared "after a lot of research", has some delectable delicacies to offer. The starters are served with tahina sauce, stuffed tomatoes and pita bread that includes rakach jibane, deep-fried patties stuffed with Arabic cheese and herbs. Fataye bi sambusek, triangular pies filled with cheese and spinach, are for the vegetarians. For non-vegetarians, kibbeh maqlieh or nuggets of ground lamb and the kafta meshwi or the meaty samosas are good options.

Items in the main course like dajaj meshwi, marinated and grilled chicken served with sumak onion and bamia yakhnie - a tomato-based okra stew with meat cubes, Egyptian yakhanie, mixed vegetables cooked with tomato and spices will satisfy your taste buds.

Though limited in variety yet scrumptious in taste are its desserts. The traditionally popular baklava is something you can relish after a good Arabic meal.
