Local goes global

Laila and Rohit Rajpal will soon bring an international range of clothes to India

At a time when industry experts are dreading the onslaught of international fashion brands in the country, Rohit and Laila Rajpal are about to launch a global prêt brand in the country.

Few people know that Rohit, the ex-tennis player, comes from a family that runs Exotique Exports that supplies denim wear to brands like Diesel and Zara.

"We have been contemplating for quite some time. We believe the Indian market is ripe now," says Rohit. The roll-out will begin in October with an outlet in Delhi. "The product would be merchandised through a franchisee model and flagship stores," adds Rohit.

Advantage India

Highlighting the advantage, he shares, "Up till now a fashion trend takes four to six months to reach India. We will make sure it comes to India as soon as it hits the ramps of New York and Paris."

Providing the creative input to the two lines would be the New York-based designer Sanjana Jon. Says Sanjana, "The focus would be on street wear, outfits which Indian youngsters could wear when they are out - college, movies, shopping. They would be customised to Indian tastes, so that nobody feels embarrassed sporting them. But no salwar-kameez for now, only Western wear."

Providing the aesthetic link would be Laila. She says art and fashion are increasingly getting blended but right now they are not making a high-end product, as the focus is on value for money. "The price range would be from Rs.500 to 5000. I would be looking into the visual appeal of the brand, especially promotion."

Son-in-law of Feroz Khan, Rohit has the entire Khan family at his disposal for promotion.

"I don't rule out the possibility of a Khan becoming the brand ambassador," sums up Rohit. For now the couple is mulling over a name for the brand.
