A pit stop for baked goodies

Bangalore's bakeries are popular for affording a quick bite for those on the move and Surya Bakery definitely draws the crowds

DON'T COUNT THE CALORIES The snacks are a big hit with customers

There is a place at the Mission Road junction, below the flyover near Double Road, that is popular with techies, students, families and passers-by. And as often the reason is in Bangalore, it is good food that draws these crowds. Surya Bakery is a popular pit stop for fast foods and snacks for people pressed for time.

Though ensconced in a busy junction, this place is simple, cosy and offers a delightful array of baked foods, munchies and snacks.

Started by Raghu, this 15-year-old bakery has become quite popular solely on the basis of its scrumptious offerings. Started as a bakery, Raghu added the snacks on the menu three years back, so that customers could simply get out of the traffic snarls and grab a quick bite. As the service here is quick, this bakery seems to be the favourite destination for people on the go.

Catering to this kind of clientele, Surya offers a whole range of grilled sandwiches that are quite easy on the stomach. Then, there are burgers, patties, veg rolls, bread, buns, pastries, cakes and other umpteen items to choose from.

Grilled sandwiches top the list when it comes to favourites. The outer crust is filled to perfection with cheese, tomatoes, aloo-cheese, pineapple-cheese, or apple-cheese. The last two are a bit tangy and grow on you.

Another thing that draws your attention is the fresh bread baked in-house that is used for the sandwiches. Mayonnaise is prepared sans eggs. All these are topped with freshly ground pepper. After sating yourself at the sandwich section, you can opt for milk shakes, making it a well-rounded meal, rather than a snack.

But if you are one of those who vouch for desi khana, than you can turn towards the veg roll section. Vegetables like mushroom, capsicum, onions are cooked in a north Indian gravy, and later on filled into the maida rolls. This will appeal easily to the staunch desi as the roll also comes with spicy green chutney.

For those who want something to snack on sinfully, there are patties — aloo, paneer and egg — that are crisp and delicious. For the health conscious, there are the ragi biscuits that melt on the tongue. This is a big hit with the elderly folk. Cake-rusk, another favourite, made of plain cake and studded with cashew nuts, is literally cake roasted in the oven to a yummy crispiness.

Dessert buffs can feast on a wide range of goodies, unmindful of calories. There are ice-creams, sundaes — single, double and triple — along with ice-cream soda (lime ice, rose magic, golden glow, California bliss), ice-cream floats. Scoops of vanilla ice creams topped with nuts, chocolate sauce, fresh cream and cherry come for just Rs. 20.

A must have here is the Death By Chocolate — a stunner with four varieties of chocolates like milk, regular and white — all melted with fresh cream and butter, and baked to perfection.

The bakery also offers fruit juices made from seasonal fruits for parched throats.

It is planning to start a "show-baking" café concept like in the western countries where customers get to see the goodies being prepared.

Surya bakery is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and can be contacted on 41248811, 22240285.
