NEW WATERS Suhasini forays into theatre

Talk about re-inventing oneself and being completely at ease with the diverse roles. Suhasini Maniratnam is donning a new role yet again. The actress, who has given stunning performances and directed tele-films and feature films, is now taking to the stage. She will be in Hyderabad to stage her play, Reading Between the Lines, on June 19 and 20, in association with the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation. An English adaptation of a Tamil short story, Iru Kaditham (Two Letters), penned by acclaimed writer Sujatha Rangarajan, the play will have Suhasini as an actress and the director. Maestro Ilayaraja has composed music for the play.

Marital discord

"The original play was written 30 years ago. The story was just over two pages and had references to the then Madras and Coimbatore. I had to change it into present scenario, make it global and extend it and if I may use Mr Sujatha's words... `embellish it.' That's what I have done to the story while taking it to the stage," explains Suhasini. The story talks about women in different generations and deals with issues related to marriage in an NRI scenario. "The story is about mid marriage crisis. The NRI phenomenon is just a backdrop to show the cultural changes externally but never internally," adds Suhasini.

For Suhasini, who has until now connected to the Hyderabad audiences through her films and the telly, theatre is a new domain. "As an actress, I am 200 films and 25 years old. But as a theatre person, I am a beginner. This is not in a conventional play format, so it will be a challenge."

Ask her why she has been synonymous with many stories penned on women and Suhasini differs, "That's not true. In fact, I made a 40-part serial called Ganesh Vasanth on two men. Indira (the first feature film directed by her) was based on a woman only because the story warranted it. This play, Reading Between the Lines, may seem to be women centric but actually talks about the man. Though he isn't visible, he is being spoken about all the time."

Suhasini finds juggling different tasks rather easy. As she mildly puts its, "I am hyper active and multi tasking makes me calm. Otherwise my energy can be difficult to handle - for others."
