Mamma's buying spree

Some great stuff here for toddlers and moms-to-be all under one roof

PICK 'EM UP An irresistible range of clothes, car seats, toys, bottles and knick-knacks await babies and moms

Modern mums and kids have a whole new world opened up to them these days, what with the array of products that have hit the market. Shopping for the child begins during pregnancy and never seems to end.

With mums-to-be becoming more conscious about their looks and the latest fashion trends, it is not surprising to see them searching stores for attractive clothing to keep them in the trendy loop during this rocky period of their life, filled with many changes, bodily and otherwise.

Cashing in on this need is U.K.-based Mother Care that was launched in Shopper's Stop recently.

Trendy western dresses to take care of those special months are on display here. However, this label does not confine its wares to maternity wear alone. Rather, it prides itself in specialising in a complete range of products for children right from birth to the age of eight.

Thus, mothers and moms-to-be can pick from a range of baby-stuff — feeding bottles, clothes, cots, and even car seats. The range of products on display is excellent; almost creating a need for things that one was hitherto unaware of.

For instance, if you check out the products lining the bath section, you could choose from a mind-boggling variety of bath tubs, anti-slip bath mats, towels, baby oils, lotions and creams. If you browse through the feeding section, you could be left wanting to pick the entire range.

To keep your child entertained without active supervision, there are again plenty of options like bouncers, bouncing cradles and walkers, play pens and safety guards for the kid's room in case of slightly older children.

There is again an elaborate assortment of prams and strollers, though most appear to be structured to suit the well-cemented British sidewalks! However, Rajiv Nair, Business Head, Mother Care India, disagrees with that. "The prams may not be exactly suited for Indian roads but they come in handy when travelling, and inside malls that are aplenty now."

As for car seats, with some costing over Rs. 4,000, one wonders if there is a market here, especially when most loathe wearing a seat belt. Says Nair: "Attitudes are certainly changing and people are looking at the safety angle. For some, it also becomes a matter of social status, especially when they are driving an expensive car."

With disposable diapers being more liberally used in place of traditional re-useable ones, this outlet has also come up with a novel product that helps to store over 50 soiled diapers at a time when not in a position to dispose of immediately. Says Nair: "Lifestyles have changed and with that, requirements too. Earlier, a mother would put an infant on her knees to give her a massage. But not anymore. Young mothers are now looking for aids to give their baby a massage or a bath. Our product range answers that requirement." To reiterate his point, he draws attention to the high chair that would make feeding your toddler that much more simple as compared to running around the house with your food tray! There is also an attractive range of items to cater to the trying potty training days. Complementing all these is a wide range of clothes at affordable prices for the children.

"We have deliberately kept the prices competitive. The products, besides catering to the requirements of mothers and small children, will also have to be affordable to find a wider market." The range of products for the mother extends beyond just trendy western wear. Items like nipple cream, breast pumps, specific medical aids needed during pregnancy are also available.

Mother Care has its outlet in Shopper's Stop on Bannerghatta Road and can be contacted on 51215681/2/3/4.
