Jewellery for everyone

Sunrise Abharan offers jewellery that suits all tastes and pockets

Walk into any jewellery store these days and chances are that you will be taken on a guided tour through its various sections where a dazzling array of jewellery occupies pride of place. Sunrise Abharan is no different. But a contemporary jewellery store, it is located in the traditional heartland of Malleswaram.

On a busy Monday morning the store was already swarming with prospective clients. The soaring gold prices seemed to have little or no impact on gold buying.

"People are buying gold irrespective of prices," laughed Y.S. Gopinath, the manager and owner.

This should not raise eyebrows in a society that is obsessed with the yellow metal, which enjoys immense sentimental value. And it's no surprise that our per capita consumption of gold ranks among the highest in the world.

Gopinath said today's young and savvy, second-generation jewellers are determined to break away from the limitations of the traditional and hoary system. He himself chucked his dreams of becoming a commercial pilot to join the family business.

Consumer-driven market

"The market is totally consumer-driven. The average woman knows exactly what is on her mind and we have to strive to give her just that. Gone are the days when families visited the jewellery store on occasions; casual buying has altered it all. Clients expect ambience and service, and hope to enjoy the shopping experience," he said while showing off the spacious and chic interiors that have replaced the classic, cramped ones, where it was practically impossible to potter around and savour the beauty of the ornaments.

"Old is new and new is old," Gopinath said about the changing tastes of buyers. He obviously was referring to antique jewellery that has made a comeback.

"The gold waist belt which is so in vogue now was nowhere to be seen even in the '90s."

While the store houses elegant gold and studded jewellery, it boasts a novel collection of diamonds as well. And if you drop in, don't forget to browse through its light and breezy collection of fashion jewellery replete with striking designs in gold and semi-precious stones. The silver section merits attention as well.

You can visit the store at Sunrise Abharan, No. 494, U.P. Royale Complex, 4th Cross, Sampige Road, Malleswaram. Ph: 41249584.
