Magic of `Maya'

Sri Kumaran's new line of silk saris looks deceptively simple

And you thought silk is only about tradition and elegance. It can be fun too. Imagine a plain cream silk sari that reveals designs in pastel shades when you walk out into the sun! It is no illusion; it is `Maya', a new range of silk saris and paavadais launched by Sri Kumaran Stores recently.

P. J. Ravi, Partner, Sri Kumaran Stores, came up with the concept inspired by the rainbow. This innovative range of saris was introduced in their stores on April 1, after six months of work on the concept. "The response has been quite good," says Ravi. "Every design gets duplicated in the grey market within an average of 10 days. But we are yet to see a duplicate of this design. That is because the technique is a well-guarded secret."

The fashion in silk clothing changes every three months and the designers have to come up with something new to keep pace. The 3-D sari was the stores earlier attempt at innovation. But the collection did not find many takers because the intricacies of the design could be seen only with special glasses.

Maya saris that have plain cream borders are priced Rs. 4,500 upward while cream coloured saris with zari borders Rs. 7,500 upward. Pavaadais are priced Rs. 3,800 upward.

Cream colour borders most of the saris because the designs appear clearer on them and also minus the zari, the saris are more affordable.
