Gizmo junkies whoop it up

Get funkier by bringing home the latest rage, says Harjeet Kaur Allagh

THE IN-THING The new mode is a big hit among youngsters PHOTO: RAJU. V

Our metamorphic ability to switch modes of entertainment is remarkable. We reveled in listening to music played on instruments until it was replaced with gramophone, radio, cassette player, jukeboxes, CD and DVD players or MP3 players. Today, a Walkman or a Discman are also redundant for the GenX.

Shakespeare had said, `If music be the food of love, play on... ' An iPod is the latest electronic gizmo to rock the music world and this is what it exactly does— plays on! A boon for music lovers, the iPod fad is fast catching on across the country.

What is an iPOD? It is a portable audio device that stores audio on a built-in hard drive that gives it a larger memory storage capacity than other portable players that rely on flash memory. It also serves as an external hard disk when connected to a computer.

The first iPOD player served only as a music player making cassettes and CD's redundant. It is a different story now. The tiny machine has been developed into a mini computer that includes a calendar and store data besides the facility to download photos and videos of one's choice.

Electrifying impact

It brings closer to you music video clippings and movies of your choice. What more, travel with a digital camera leaving behind all those memory cards at home.

The iPOD camera connector not only allows you to indulge in a shooting-spree all day through but it also transfers the images from the camera to the iPOD for instant viewing. Taking the lead in launch of the iPods, the Apple Company has made it possible for youngsters to experience the blissful state that is associated with the mini tool.

It comes with a set of headphones that electrify your senses, coaxing you to jive to music even while on the move--jogging, walking or even shopping.

The miniature machines have inundated the city and a few customs notified shops are making good business by selling iPods. Bose `N' Bose electronics showroom took the lead in introducing denizens of Vijayawada to the novel amusement channel. The showroom has become the destination for those seeking solace in the latest mode of entertainment. `There are a few shops that sell iPods but they do not provide after sales services or help the customer download music or photos or accessorize them like we do' says the proud owner, Bhushiah.

Fleeting moments

Young collegians, not willing to let a single moment pass without excitement, are potential buyers of the music genies. Music buffs cannot stop eulogizing the new piece of equipment for its many benefits. "This is a wonderful entertainment. Time just flies by even when I am lonely and glued to my iPod. I use it even while studying", beams C. Siddhartha, an engineering student. He owns an iPODMini with 6GB having a capacity to store 1500 film songs. He has a Bose speaker attached to it.

Vivacious young Nikhila is an intermediate second year student and cannot stop raving about her latest toys— iPODs of 20Gb and 60Gb. "I can now store all my favourite numbers, family pictures, video clippings and watch them whenever I feel like it without the hassle of buying cassettes, CDs or DVDs", says she finding it hard to contain excitement.

Abhishek is never tired of speaking about the merits of an iPODs. He has an iPOD Mini with 4Gb and a storage capacity of 1000 film songs and Apple earphones as a bonus.

"It is very precious to me as all my contacts are safely stored in it. In addition to the calendar facility, it lets me slide down into the groovy kind of music that is very close to my heart. It is an inseparable part of me now," he concludes.

Music speaks what cannot be expressed,
Soothes the mind and gives it rest,
Heals the heart and makes it whole,
Flows from heaven to the soul!
