Tadoba National Park
One of two parks in the country that boasts of being the home of the Asiatic Lion (the other being Gir), the Tadoba National Park was established in 1935. Declared a
National Park in 1955, it was brought under the fold of Project Tiger as the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Rreserve in 1995 (area 625.4sq. km). The area also includes the Andhari Wildlife
The sanctuary was created in 1986, through which the Pandharpauri river flows. Named after a local Gond Taru, who, according to legend, was killed in a heroic fight with a tiger and is locally known as Tadoba.
The park is also known as the Jewel of Vidharba. The rich, dry, deciduous forests are populated with sal, margosa, mahua, mango and bamboo, particularly around the
Tadoba.
Area: 117 sq. km.
Animals: Asiatic lion, tiger, chital, sambar, barking deer, spotted deer, antelope, chausinga, nilgai, sloth bear, Indian bison, wild dog, hyena, jackals, gaur, mouse deer, wild boar, leopard, panther, flying squirrel and crocodiles.
