Christmas is around the corner and shops are filled with X'mas based products, says Rema Sundar

DECK THE HALLS Choose from a wide range of festive decorations this Christmas

Christmas is back, bringing with it a rainbow of festive colours. This occasion to light up one's home in multi-hued stars, colourful festoons and balloons is eagerly anticipated by people of all age groups, especially children. Gearing up for the festive season, are shops in the city that are stocking all kinds of products associated with Christmas.

Square One's sale at Little Flower Church at Vellayambalam has been attracting families with its jovial Santa Clauses, colourful decorations and delicious home-made eats.

The aesthetically done-up hall has something for the whole family.

While children rush to Santa Claus to have their picture taken with him, the decorated candles, embroidered bed linen, frock and so on attract the women. A wide variety of cakes, cookies and pickles are there to choose from and each is value for money.

Decking up the X'mas tree with bright decorations has for long been an important feature of the festivities.

Christmas trees

At The Garden City, Narmada, are different kinds of trees made of `needle pine', `optic fibre' and those made of plastic shreds, with and without decorations. A one-feet tree made of plastic shreds without decorations is priced at Rs.75 and a similar tree at three feet with decorations costs around Rs.750. A decorated optic fibre tree costs below Rs.1,300.

The needle pine Christmas tree resemble real trees and last longer. An `extra large' variety of this tree without decorations costs Rs.5,500.

`Archies Gallery' and Dreams too have trees in different sizes and at prices ranging from Rs.99 to Rs.2,000. The trees come with and without decorations. A four-feet silver coloured X'mas tree here, priced at Rs.499, is different from the traditional green colour. Apart from trees available in the market are abundant choices of bright and brilliant tree decorations.

From mistletoe wreaths, poinsettias, stems of berries, bells and Santas, there is a whole range of ornaments to adorn your home and X'mas tree. Colourful glass balls, stem decorations and leaf fillers are among the other attractive options seen here.

Box of decorations

A box of decorations, complete with a candle stand and ribbons, priced at Rs.295 are ideal gifts. And if you are not sure of how to go about with decorating a tree, assistance can be had from the creative person here.

Varieties of balls, bells and drums are available at `Dreams'. The drums are sold from Rs.5 to Rs.6 per piece and a small red and white Santa shoes costs Rs.25. A set of three balls, one bell, one Santa, two drums and three small wrapped gifts, priced at Rs.45 is an economical buy.

Crib decoration

Putting a crib together is religiously followed by the faithful. At Archies Gallery, clay figurines of infant Christ, the shepherds and the three wise kings are available as sets in various sizes and at prices ranging from Rs.79 to Rs.549. Also available are clay models of the `Last Supper,' Santa clocks, a battery operated musical Christmas tree and a musical model of Santa playing the violin.

Santa clocks are priced at Rs.195 and the musical Christmas tree costs Rs.695. Apart from decorations and clay figurines, also available in these stores are soft toys, Santa masks and wall hangers in various sizes and colours.
