A variety of paintings and prints to suit every taste and wallet is on show at Vinyasa

ART FOR ALL A couple of paintings on display at the show
The modest display space at Vinyasa Art Gallery is overrun by a profusion of vibrant colour consequent to painted canvases hung from floor to ceiling and even stacked on the floor. It is that time of year again when the gallery hosts an exhibition-cum-sale that tries to cater to every size of wallet and to suit every taste. Paintings and prints range from the academic style to more creative expression, which while mostly in the figurative mode also include a few abstracts. Originals and copies, with canvases of every size vying for attention are in different techniques and media acrylics, oils, mixed media, watercolours and graphic prints.
While the major portion of the works is by up and coming artists, there are a few works by graduate students of art. At the other end of the spectrum are signed limited edition prints by celebrated names in modern Indian art which include Ravi Varma, M. F. Husain, Paritosh Sen, Krishen Khanna, Laxman Aelay, Laxma Goud, Sunil Das, T. Vaikuntam, Gurucharan Singh and Shiva Prasanna. If, however, a print is not acceptable and only an original will do, there are small format works by well-known names such as K. Muralidharan and Achutan Kudallur to keep the price in check.
The Affordable Art show at Vinyasa Art Gallery is an invitation to novices and seasoned collectors to browse through a variety of paintings and prints. Traditional landscapes share wall space with abstract canvases, and original limited edition screen prints are displayed next to copies of Renaissance portraits. Other objects such as table coasters inspired by the likes of S. H. Raza's work and framed gesso paintings take up the space in the centre of the gallery.
That the affordable art show is in its sixth year only proves that this concept works. With prices ranging from Rs. 250 to Rs.7,000, the exhibition and sale of economically priced art is on till June 25 at Vinyasa Art Gallery, The Music Academy premises, 306, TTK Road, Alwarpet.
