DESIGN: Roopa Vohra captures the mystique of the Mughals in her new line "Persia"

Persian romance: Some of Roopa's creations

Tradition with a trendy twist. That's the quintessence of revivalist and couture jeweller Roopa Vohra's creations.

In Chennai to showcase her new line "Persia", Roopa traces the intricacies of her craftsmanship. "It's the detailing that counts. Since I've drawn inspiration from Mughal designs, each piece takes about six weeks to create. The finesse lies in the setting and the carving."

Persia captures the romance of the past in a burst of colour — radiant rubies, dazzling diamonds, aesthetically cut yellow, blue topazes and pink tourmalines. "In today's fast-paced world, people have no time to appreciate art. That's why, I've tried to bring some element of art and history into my jewellery."

Roopa, who revived the Thewa art (gold on glass), later went on to restore the lost glory of the naqaashi (a 400-year-old Mughal architectural art form). Though the two collections — Persia and Thewa — are inspired by the workmanship of the past, there's a contemporary appeal about them. "But Persian design sensibilities have been a common thread in my work. And that's precisely why I decided to do an exclusive line using the intricate patterns of Persia."

"A unique feature of `Persia' is that the jewellery is very understated. It's not flashy. There's a dull look that is sure to appeal to youngsters."

"Persia" will be unveiled in the city at an exhibition from April 16 to 18, at Wallace Hall, The Park Sheraton. The range comprises pendants, earrings and neck pieces priced at Rs 5, 000 upwards. There is also a limited edition of silver jewellery.
