Actress Navneet Kaur is particular about the roles she chooses, asserting that only different roles can prove artistic mettle

SHE IS forthright, cheerful and talkative. However, beyond all this there is an extremely talented and eager performer in Navneet Kaur, who is waiting to prove her potential at the box-office. After the deglamorised role that she last played in Seenu Vasanthi Lakshmi, she says she will now be seen in a totally diverse character in Jagapathi.
"Jagapathi is a complete diversion from the role I had last essayed in Shatruvu. Besides being a commercial film on a much bigger scale, with a big cast and a leading banner, I also have a very different look in the film. It is easy for an artiste to get typecast in the industry and I definitely don't want to be stereotyped as an art house character or a gharelu bhenji, or for that matter a sex symbol."
So how did she find Jagapathi Babu as a person? "He is the kind who goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable on the sets. On the other hand, he does not take you for granted and makes sure that he keeps a professional distance. It is very important for a newcomer to get that feeling of reassurance, which he gave me. It was a very comfortable working relationship with him on the sets of the film."
Giving her take on some of her contemporaries who have no hesitation in doing item numbers and resorting to skin show in the face of cutthroat competition, she says, "I am not averse to wearing sexy outfits if that is the need of the character and the script. However, I will not hesitate to refuse any role where I am portrayed as a passing reference in the film. As for item numbers, I see them as an avenue for those who want to get quick visibility and be noticed. I'd like to do an item number only when I am more established as an actress and not vice-versa. " Navneet is just 17 but has got all it takes to make a success of her career. "Facing the camera has become second nature to me. I think my confidence comes from the number of years that I have been working as a child artiste. I did music videos too and that's how I got noticed and bagged Kannada and Telugu films. My Hindi film Chetna is about to hit the screen and I am thankful to Champak Jain for giving me a break," she explains with a smile.
So where does she see herself going from here? "Right now my priorities lie in selecting the right kind of set-ups and roles and the directors I would like to work with. I am looking forward to working with directors Krishna Vamsi and Teja. My role models are Simran and Soundarya," she declares winding up after a long tiring day.
