DESI PRINTS, earthen shades

Soma specialises in Jaipuri block-prints.

ALL OF us are familiar with block-printed fabrics used in dress materials and saris; but can you imagine bright and colourful ethnic hand block-printed jhablas, booties, bibs and bottle cosies for infants? Well, this is exactly the kind of stuff that you can expect at Soma, the Jaipuri lifestyle store that opened recently in Bangalore.

Like its counterparts elsewhere, the Bangalore outlet too is lively and brimming with vibrant colours. Welcome to this one-stop shop for exclusive Jaipuri block-printed furnishings, accessories, crafts and fashion wear for men, women, and children.

"The speciality of Soma is that while we use the traditional Rajasthani craft of block-printing; the designs and styles created are very contemporary and cosmopolitan in appeal," says Radhakrishnan Nair, Managing Director.

Primarily started as an export company in 1984, the entire range available at Soma is extremely trendy, but with an ethnic and rustic feel.

Soma offers a wide range of fashion wear for both men and women. While you can choose from the gorgeous bright hues, you can also go for the elegant `white on whites'. The latter has a universal appeal and never seems to go out of fashion. "We have our very own design studio and work out a different look for each season," adds Mr. Nair.

Women's wear consists of kurta pyjamas, available both as sets and individual pieces, trendy nighties, housecoats, bathrobe sets, tops, and pleated skirts. Check out Soma's range of cotton, chiffon, and silk saris. Priced between Rs. 500 and Rs. 2,000, the best part about them is that you can match them up with the readymade blouses and cholis. The range of gharara pants, breaches, and kimonos is impressive. Accessories include carpet slip-ons, slippers, brocade bags, and some exquisite beaded jewellery.

The men's range includes some well-designed pin-tuck work kurtas and printed shirts. The latter is available in various sizes, according to Indian and American standards.

Soma is one place you can definitely freak out shopping for your little one. A big draw here is the assorted reversible quilts available in two sizes. They are priced between Rs. 600 and Rs. 745.

Home range

The home furnishings collection has some lovely curtains, bedspreads, cushion and pillow covers, and table mat sets. Their wide array of quilts would definitely go a long way in adding the much-needed exuberance to your bedroom. Available in four sizes — namely King, Queen, Large Single and Regular Single, these quilts are priced between Rs. 870 and Rs. 1,900.

Apart from all of this, you could lay your hands on simply crafted yet classy items such as photo frames, storage boxes, kitchen accessories, files, folders, and jewellery stands. The multipurpose bags and pouches available form great gifting ideas. Don't miss the cool laptop bag and wonderful organza decorative lights for your home!

"All our products are subject to stringent quality control tests at every stage of production," says Mr. Nair, commenting on the quality of products available at Soma.

Well, the list at Soma seems to be just endless. But as the brochure says: "There is always something new at Soma." The store worth a visit at least for the sheer exclusivity and attractiveness of its ware in terms of colours and ethnic prints.

Soma is located at Unit 101, The Pavilion, M.G. Road, Bangalore 560001. Phone: 25326363.
