ALL OF you have seen the famous Valampuri sangu (conch) right? What sets the one at the Aadi thiruvizha at Poompuhar, apart from the rest is its size.
From a distance, you can hardly identify it. Nonetheless, the miniature (known as arisi sangu) conch has caught the attention of everyone visiting the sales showroom of Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation.
But, traditionalists, take heart. The pristine Valampuri sangu with its splendour intact, is also part of the exhibition.
There is an exclusive section for puja materials in the expo. You can pick puja bells, idols of deities in brass and copper and a whole lot of other items here. Small tridents and glass lingams are also available.
Keychains with sozhis and rudraksha malas are showcased too. Silver anklets, necklaces, stone-studded bangles, spadiga malas and navaratna malas have also been exhibited.
But, it is the Tanjore art plates and paintings and Jaipur wooden boxes that have added charm to the expo.
The huge plates made of brass, copper and silver stand out thanks to the intricate designs. The detailing in silver is also appealing.
The wooden boxes are wonderful examples of how workmanship can lend beauty to an object.
The replica of the Asoka Chakra (made of white cedar wood) is the other attraction in this section. Wax elephants are showcased in one end of the showroom.
Embossed with glass and beads, these decorative articles come in two to ten inches sizes.
You can also buy brass items from Moradabad, aimpon and silver-oxidised jewellery. Then, there are beautiful idols of deities made of marble dust.
"Aadi is the month when discount sales usually take place. People also go in for bulk purchases. We have organised the expo to cash in on the Aadi fever," says P. Mohamed Ali, Manager of Poompuhar.
"This time we have exhibited a lot of decorative items and gift articles, as they are quite popular," he says.
The showroom offers a 10 to 50 per cent discount. The expo is open between 9.30 a.m. and 8 p.m. till August 5.
