Breakfast at Tiffinys
Tiffinys offers a filling breakfast buffet combining three cuisines that'll leave you asking for more
IT'S A busy, busy world and the first victim in homes with working couples is cooking.
Not that no food comes out of the kitchen; it's just that the joy of cooking is gone. Then, there are those blues-filled days when all you want to do is get up late and have a sumptuous breakfast.
Trouble is, you'll have to make the breakfast yourself.
The perfect way to end your misery is to drive down to the nearest eatery and order yourself some good breakfast. But, with limited choices, you'd probably have to settle for a traditional South Indian breakfast.
If you're the kind who loves a bit of this and that for breakfast, your best option would be a breakfast buffet, where you can choose from a minimum of three cuisines.
Tiffinys, the 24-hour coffee shop at Alankar Grande offers just that. The buffet, priced at Rs. 75 (exclusive of taxes) offers a vast spread.
The first on the counter (depending on which side you start from) are fresh fruit juices. They offer two seasonal juices every day. On my day out, I sampled both grape and sweet lime and then went in for a combo too. All tasted great. Next came two platters filled with cut fruits.
Staple breakfast fare like idlis (really fluffy ones!), hot-off-the-tawa dosas and crispy vadas are available. An addition to the South Indian platter is either upma, pongal or sevai.
Accompaniments are coconut, onion-tomato and corriander chutneys and fragrant shallot sambar.
Load your plate and sit inside the cozy room, done up with glass-top tables. Once you're through with this course, lay your hands on the paratha counter. The restaurant offers either aloo or gobi parathas, chapathis and puri-masal.
In the continental section, choose from wheat, corn or choco flakes, served either with hot or cold milk.
Then, tuck into jam rolls, cinnamon rolls, Danish pastries, muffins or croissants, two of which are available every day. These are served with jam, marmalade, butter and honey.
Toasts are made to order (this I learnt much later), but that is something most outside customers don't know since there is no indication to that effect.
Eggs, too. Boiled eggs rest on a bed of rock salt on the counter, but if you want an omelette with toppings of your choice, just inform the pleasing stewards waiting in the background. They'll get it for you straightaway.
To finish off, choose from filter coffee, decaf coffee or tea.
The buffet is open from 7 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.
In case you step in after 10, just ensure you check what is on offer and inform the steward when you want something. Because the food must be served hot, the hotel prepares only little at a time.
When I went in, the vada tray was snear-empty. But, before I walked around and got back to the task on hand, it had been replenished with the piping hot, crispy brown roundels.
The restaurant also has baby chairs, which is a blessing when you are taking your children out.
