THIS IS one exhibition for shop-aholics with a taste for tradition. The Kerala Artisans' Development Corporation (KADCO) has organised an exhibition of art and craft from all over the country.
While the primary focus is the woodwork and brassware, particular to Kerala, there's something from across the country to decorate the home with. In fact, you can almost miss the Kerala craft while looking at all the other splendid artefacts.
Textiles include cotton and silk saris from Pochampally, Gadwal, Siddipet, Venkatagiri and Mangalgiri ranging from Rs. 400 to Rs. 1,800. Tie-and-dye dupattas, appliqué worked sets and Lucknowi kurtas are also available.
There's a whole range of intricately carved and gorgeous looking walnut wood furniture from Kashmir. The roll-top desks, centre tables, bookcases and occasional tables are beautiful and priced between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 40,000. Woodwork from Uttar Pradesh is also on display a range of trays, chessboards, spoons, coasters, bowls and gift items.
Jewellery ranges from simple stones for Rs. 50 to cultured pearls and gold-coated kundans for Rs. 4,000. There are endless rows of bangles in lacquer, glass and metal.
Rajasthani paintings on silk and velvet are another attraction. Tanjore paintings are also on display but the larger paintings are not as carefully done as the smaller ones. Khurja pottery, dress material from Orissa, jute handicrafts, metal craft and gemstone paintings complete the display.
The exhibition is on till June 13 at C. P. Art Centre, 1, Eldams Road, Alwarpet.
